Clothes for modeling

The right apparel for a modeling portfolio may make or break a career. A model's portfolio is similar to a resume for other careers. It is evidence that the model can perform the task at hand and has the look for the job. The biggest part of a model's portfolio is her pictures. The clothing she wears for those photos may make the difference in getting the job, or going without work.

Classic Fashion

  • Many photographers prefer to see models in less trendy clothes for their portfolio pictures. Stick with traditional clothing. Look for fashions that fit the your body type. Knee-length or slightly shorter skirts, button-down blouses and plain slacks are basically timeless clothing. Plain shorts and tank tops almost never go out of style. T-shirts and jeans remain a sporty fashion throughout the years.

Patterns and Colors

  • As a general rule, avoid patterns on clothing for modeling portfolio pictures. Stripes will make your body look out of proportion or make you look as if you were trying to a hide part of yourself. Busy patterns are distracting as are large prints. Bright colors may wash out skin tone. Stick with solid, warm colors. Blacks, whites, creams and other warm tones are preferable.

Off-Label Clothes

  • Instead of going for a particular designer, choose off-label clothing. Selecting a specific designer may limit the way you are viewed for various modeling jobs. On On the other hand, off-label clothes can provide you with a wider range of looks for potential employers to view. Visit discount stores and thrift shops. Keeping the preferred colors, patterns and classic style in mind, mix and match off-label or lesser-known designers to create original outfits instead of mimicking a specific designer's catalog look.

Mix It Up

  • A model must show multiple styles in a portfolio to widen the range of available job opportunities. High-fashion, sporty, sexy and casual styles are only a few of the looks that a model displays. When selecting clothing, select versatile items to show off different looks. Match a plain button-down shirt with a pair of shorts for a casual look and a skirt for a business appearance. Pair the same shorts with a plain T-shirt for a sporty short.
