Questions that I have been asked.

Jacque Russell Imagery is tasteful portraits with a hint of sexiness. Everyone has their own idea of what sexy is and what they are comfortable with. Our sessions are fun, sexy, flirty, and sensual while staying within your comfort level.

What is Boudoir?
Boudoir photography captures an intimate celebration of love.  It can be bold, tender, understated, vivid, and is always a wonderful experience to have.  My clients often finish our session saying they feel beautiful and that it was so much fun, even for those who were hesitant at first.

The term “boudoir” may also be ascribed to a genre of photography. Boudoir photography is not generally a new concept and numerous examples exist of early Hollywood stars such as Kathleen Meyers, Clara Bow, Mae West and Jean Harlow photographed in a boudoir style.

However there is a burgeoning modern trend for boudoir photography in some countries. Typically shot in a photographer’s studio or luxury hotel suites, it has become fashionable to create a set of sensual or sexually suggestive images of women (and occasionally men and couples) in “boudoir style”. The most common manifestation of contemporary boudoir photography is to take variations of candid and posed photographs of the subject partly clothed or in lingerie. Nudity is more often implied than explicit.

Boudoir photography maybe distinguished from other photography genres such as glamour photography, fine art nude photography and erotic photography. According to research carried out in Digital Boudoir Photography (2006), John G. Blair said that the word “Boudoir” or “Boudoir portrait” was used in 1980 by Motherlode Photography Studio in California to describe a picture more elegant than “erotic portrait” or “semi nude portrait”.

Boudoir photography is alluring and sensual and proud of the fact. It’s a genre of photography that enables women to express inner and outer beauty.
Why have a Boudoir session done?
Many clients come wanting sexy, sensual portraits for their significant other. Others come in wanting to do a session for them selves. Having gorgeous and sexy portraits of YOU can be an incredible self esteem booster. Confidence….. Nothing is more sexier than that.  You will be walking out of the session with your head held high with confidence. It is all about the experience and feeling of being beautiful.

Here are some tips and hints to help you prepare for your session.

Hair and Make-up:
Most women do their own hair and make-up. Salons and department store make-up counters are also good resources. We will also provide this service for a small fee. Who ever does your make-up please let them know that it is for a photo shoot; it will need to be a little darker than normal.

Body weight and Image:
Most women (including myself) don’t have bodies like a super model. Don’t worry. That doesn’t mean we can’t have gorgeous and sexy photographs. We will highlight your assets while disguising the parts that you are self conscious about. One thing to always remember, your significant other loves you just the way you are. Our goal is to let you see how beautiful you really are. No matter your size, your portraits will be stunning.

Pick a theme:
Pick something that makes you feel sexy. It can be lingerie, business suits, doctor coat, fire fighters, turnouts, police uniform, or any other fetish that you or your significant other may have. You can also do Pin-up style clothing.

Clothing Choices:
Bring clothes that you feel sexy and beautiful in. Bra, panties, corsets, teddies, stockings, tank top, booty shorts, sports jerseys, and men’s business shirts are all popular. Remember to bring accessories for each outfit as well as sexy shoes. We do have some jewelry and shoes that can be borrowed. We also have some plus size lingerie.

Modesty and Nudity:
You don’t have to take your clothes off to be sexy.  Clothed, partially clothed, hinted nudity, a full nude can all be sexy. We will only shoot what you are comfortable with showing in your photographs. We will never push you into doing something that you don’t want to.

Retouching:
We do a little bit. We will soften the skin, brighten eyes and remove bruises, acne, stretch marks but only if need be. We will do creative editing to give you more printing options. Example of creative editing is color, vintage, color, and black and white.

Privacy:
Privacy is a concern due to the intimate nature of boudoir sessions. All our boudoir images are kept in strict confidence and NO images will be shown without written permission from you, the client. All images on site have written permission to be displayed. We print and make our own albums in house. See sample page to see some of our custom albums. If a large print is wanted we use a professional lab that safeguards the privacy of our client’s portraits.

Girlfriend Session:
You and three to four of your best friends can get together and do your session at the same time. Each girl pays the session fee. They can be done at your home or in a local hotel. Each of you will be photographed individually as you are ready. We will make sure that each of you get the appropriate amount of images. At the end when everyone is dressed we will take a group shot to commemorate the session.

Where to do your session:
Your session can be done at my home studio, your home, a local hotel, a bed and breakfast, and even outside in a private or secluded area.

Tips for the morning of your session:
Drink lots of water and wear loose fitting clothing. Avoid tight fitting undergarments as they are most likely to leave markings on your skin.

Tips for after your session:
Getting into and holding some of the most flattering poses can give you a work-out so don’t be surprised if you’re a little sore afterwards. Drink lots of water and take pain meds as needed.

What to wear to photo session?

What to Wear to a Photo shoot

The first step to answering what to wear during a photo shoot is to ask “What do you want from the photo shoot?” And you need to ask “What do you want from the photo shoot?” for most any subject including yourself, kids and even pets.

A lot depends on your taste in fashion, what you will be using the pictures for and how you think that fashion will look in 20 years.

Your Taste in Fashion

Why is this important?  It’s easy to see that you will feel most comfortable in clothes that you like!  And your comfort level translates to the lens, every time.  If you are comfortable and relaxed, you’re going to see that in the pictures.

What Are You Using The Pictures For?

If you need head shots for acting, chances are that you won’t be wearing the same thing to a family portrait shoot…
One good example is most High School Seniors want to do high fashion looks for their senior pictures.  And who can blame them?  They are about to graduate high school and take on the world, they should be remembered with flair.  Chances are though that some of your family (maybe the older population) would much prefer some more traditional portrait pictures.   We have you covered there, too – just bring multiple outfits.

For family portraits, I would recommend casual to dressy clothing that will not look “dated” in 20 years. What the heck do you mean by that? If your family is very laid back and relaxed, then chances are the you and the rest of the family may be most comfortable in jeans. You can always dress up a little by adding button down shirts and other dressier fashions.  Is your family a little more formal? You can add sport jackets and dresses or even go the full formal route and wear suits and formal dresses.   Kid’s don’t want to get dressed up for the family portrait?   Make a compromise and bring two wardrobes – one that they want to wear and one that will make you happy.  Relax - I shoot digital these days, so pixels are cheap.

20 Years From Now…

When you find these pictures in a photo album, how are they going to look?  Something that is very “in” now may look silly in 20 years. Ever watch a movie and guess when it was filmed by the clothes the actors were wearing?   Remember parachute pants?  Bell bottom jeans?  If your pictures are to be used in the here and now (like commercial head shots), then dress trendy.  Otherwise I would recommend something a little more timeless….

And Some Other Suggestions…

People always ask what is the best style of clothes and colors of clothes for their body and skin type.   Here are some suggestions.  You can always call me and ask what I would recommend for you.

Try to avoid patterns, they distract from the main subject…you!  Given the choice between a patterned shirt and a plain one, I would reccomend the plain one.  In general, simpler is better.   When coordinating pants and shirts or skirts and shirts, try to pick colors and fabrics that contrast, particularly with dark colors.  If you wear all dark colors of the same material, it will be hard to distinguish any details in the picture, making it boring.

Generally darker colors will slim you down. Bright colors can be tricky, especially if you are light skinned.  Generally try to avoid colors that clash with your natural skin tone.  If your cheeks are always rosy colored, try to avoid reds.  If you have blond hair – avoid the yellows.  Don’t forget you want contrast.  You can always bring a few sets of clothes to a photo shoot and we can mix and match on the spot. Don’t forget to coordinate your nail colors with the style and color of clothes that you will be wearing…

And Some Do’s and Dont’s…

Finally some Do’s and Don’ts:
  • Do pick clothes that you are comfortable in.
  • Do try on ALL the clothes before coming to a photo shoot.  Nothing like finding out something doesn’t fit at the shoot.
  • Do remember to coordinate your nail color (both hands and toes if you will be wearing open toe shoes or if you will be barefoot). Also, remember that your nails should have a fresh coat, that chips will show in the pictures.
  • Do remember that you want contrast.
  • Do have a bright light on when picking out clothes for the photo shoot.

  • Don’t worry about bringing too many clothes, as long as you bring a variety.
  • Don’t worry if you don’t like something, you can always go onto the next wardrobe.
  • Don’t forget to put a fresh coat on your nails – chips will show in the photos!
  • Don’t bring clothes with busy patterns on them.
